Passion vs. pollution: Nissan's sporty EV roadmap
With the Tokyo Motor Show well underway, Nissan's taken a Leaf out of its own history and shown the first in what it claims will be a full range of sporty cars. The Hyper Force evokes the GT-R's dramatic lines, but is – predictably – electric. Toyota's FT-Se gauges the interest investing in sporty EVs could yield for a GR86 or Supra successor, and Mazda's Iconic SP shows a reimagined MX-5's potential (we drive the MX-30 R-EV to see just how relevant the return of the rotary could be).

Even Honda is getting in on electric nostalgia, with a new Prelude. The concepts from Japan look striking, but Ferrari's SP-8 has the advantage – it's a futuristic roadster one lucky customer can drive right now.

There's still plenty of drama away from the electric revolution; eight generations of Corvette have tried to outshine the 911: tearing up the old blueprints and starting again might give the latest Z06 a chance, even against the 911 GT3 RS. Read our twin-test and watch the video below.

Have a great weekend, and thanks for reading!

Following on from lightweight, engaging and simple sports cars in the electric age is a challenge more firms are taking on – but small affordable coupés could be particularly hard to replace. That doesn't seem to dissuade Toyota, however...

Kentucky Fried GT: Corvette Z06 vs. 911 GT3 RS
It's been a similar recipe for years; fight Stuttgart's rear-engined, flat-six sports car with a front-engined, V8 sports car that costs less. Except this time, the General (Motors, Colnel Sanders hasn't been promoted) has messed with the herbs and spices. Starting with a bespoke, all-new V8 that boasts the highest output yet for a naturally aspirated unit, Chevrolet's Z06 is gunning for nothing less than the GT3 RS.

Mazda MX-30 R-EV: rotary returns
Compact, clever and CO2-free: Mazda's small electric SUV could go the distance, if only it could go... any meaningful distance. The small battery pack of the standard model limits range to double digits for many users, so the rotary engine's been dusted off, reworked and tuned to charge on the go. Does it work? CAR tests the MX-30 R-EV in this weeks' review
